Youth as Resources (YAR) programs are initiated in all kinds of communities-large and small, rural and urban, demographically diverse (by ethnicity, race, socioeconomic levels, religion, age, gender, etc.)-all with a unique set of needs and resources. Each YAR program develops its characteristics, policies, and procedures while conforming to the core standards of YAR.

Program Start-Up Follow these guidelines for starting your YAR program:

1. Assess Community Needs and Assets to help identify youth, adults, and organizations that could benefit from YAR.

2. Decide whether your YAR program will be established within a larger youth or community service agency or as an independent nonprofit organization.

3. Raise funds to support YAR program operations and a grant pool for youth led service. Develop a workable budget and determine the minimum amount that needs to be raised to launch the program. 4. Identify a Program Coordinator for YAR. Hire as soon as funding allows.

5. Recruit and establish a YAR governing board of youth and adults. Begin by recruiting key individuals (ideally one youth and one adult) to co-chair the board and work as partners in building a board that represents the diversity of the community.

6. Activate the board. The board develops key policies and procedures for the program and determines grant eligibility, selection criteria, and the selection process.

7. Reach out to the community to attract youth from a wide variety of backgrounds to get involved in YAR projects, adults who will support and guide youth in their project work, and nonprofit agencies who will sponsor youth grant applications and be able to receive YAR grant funds.

8. Complete the program certification process in order to be a part of the YAR network.
